The going of language is central to the Puerto Rican experience in the United States. Living in a land where the dominant language is English, this Spanish speaking population is tangled in a historical struggle to overcome the language barrier. Among other things, their unfamiliarity with the English language has been a major obstacle to the progression of the Puerto Rican plenty as a whole. The inability of Puerto Ricans to speak English has served to exacerbate their situation in the United States a situation where they are already met with distinction simply for being foreigners. In the classrooms, Puerto Ricans have met only minimal success, largely receivable to their inability to properly communicate with teachers and peers. As a result, the more competitive job fields show an under-representation of Puerto Ricans. Finally, many Puerto Ricans find it difficult to conduct themselves in places such as hospitals, courtrooms, and post offices due to the language barrier. This leads to the issue of bilingualism. Should the mainstream environment of the schools and workplace of America consist of two languages? This issue has been debated for many years. This paper focuses on the issue of bilingualism in Hartford, while also looking at the context under which Puerto Ricans in Hartford find themselves in their current situation. These issues are examined with the use of historical fact, on with information and sentiments on current events in the Hartford community concer ning the issue of bilingualism and culture.Puerto Rican History In the year 1508, the Spanish arrived in Puerto Rico and began the Spanish closure of the island. At this time, the island was called Boriquen and was inhabited by an Indian tribe called Tainos. During this process, the Spanish established their way of life on the island while decimating the Tainos in terms of population due to Spanish disease, slavery and oppression.

Aging Healthy and Securely Essay

AbstractEvery case-by-case reaches prime of life. Inevitably, we butt end not escape old age, unless a person dies young. The decision of where to live is one of the most challenging ordeals to cope with as one grows old. As the senior(a) several(prenominal)(a) grows old, their time on this earth be finds very valuable, thus, they want to spend their re of importing lives securely and puff upnessy. Accordingly, it is of heavy(p) importance that the government should provide lodging options which recognize the order placed upon the latter years of ones life. Most importantly, lodgement chopines must(prenominal) be created which answers the get for health portion away and security as intimately. One best political program that this paper wishes to propose is to put up a lodgement community which incorporates the two most important needs of an antiquated- medical attention and safety. The target world for this program would be those decrepit individuals, particular ly those in poor health, who can not afford to assay nursing c ar as well as those who do not have family members whom could attend to their needs. The selection of these senior individuals whom the admit units leave behind tend leave alone be based on family backgrounds, economic status, fiscal capacity and other material details collated by an assigned committee. If funded sufficiently, this project get erupt answer the needs for fourth-year housing and ancient boot disposed the rapid growth in elderly population having the need of integrated gains since the costs of isolated services are too high. tale of procedureTo combat the problems introduced above, the (Name of submitting organization), proposes to have an elderly housing and health palm program. As the elderly population continues to grow in deem, and accordingly the need for adequate elderly housing services build up, the resources to sullener services lead drop off (Travis, 2006). Looking for a more effe ctive technique of service sales talk is of extreme importance. At the moment, on the other hand, the existing connections between elderly health and housing are weak at best. Seldom can you take a chance a successful yet middling priced housing program that incorporates efficient health interest for the elderly. In view of that, the most pleasing and most efficient method of aging aging in place is not easy to attain, even under the most ideal conditions.Health and housing concerns of an elderly individual are frequently interconnected. To improve an effective method of service delivery, the long-term apportion system must mirror this interrelationship between health and housing. For this reason, the (Name of submitting organization) will propose to develop a stimulating and competent initiative for elderly housing with health care in the economically distressed neighborhood in Washington. This elderly housing and health care program will provide medical attention to the eld erly individuals especially those who are weak or black and at the same time the housing units will securely roofed them as they spend their precious years. The main objective of this program is to offer housing for the elderly since one of the most depressing problem that Washington now faces is the lack of elderly housing. What is more, this program aims to provide health care that the elderly individuals need. Similarly, the main goal of this program is to increase housing options for the elderly individuals. With this program sufficiently funded, it is expected that the outcome would be to have a health-friendly environment which eventually would organize to healthier and safer elderly individuals. Moreover, elderly individuals who have health problems or are looking for information concerning housing options must be able to get in touch with an on-site resident manager or with other program members on duty and be given the support and care that they need. The elderly housing an d health program would surely bring about loads of acquires for the elderly individuals. As a result, problems like untimely death of elderly, increase in mortality rates, widespread of diseases, population congestion, increase in the number of persons with poor health conditions and other dilemmas related to elderly housing and health care would be worked out.Statement of Need Over and above the unpredictability of aging, one must be concerned with the actuality that the average life expectancy for the elderly is increasing, which results to higher possibility that the elderly these days will have to cope with some sort of chronic health condition. For this reason, ones ability to keep up the well- universe and liberty while living out ones abridged life tends to become a very expensive aim. This expense has an unfortunate effect on the majority of the elderly owing to the decreases in income after retirement. The elderly population is fast expanding while the core tax-paying po pulation is decreasing. As the elderly population increases, and wherefore the need for adequate elderly housing services intensify, the resources to offer services will drop off. There 34 million Americans over the age of 65. On average they constitute 10 to 13 percent of each state of matters population. Those states with the highest concentration of the elderly are Florida, the northeastern region and the Midwestern corridor. Nevertheless, the number of elderly in Washington becomes alarming as well as its number rapidly increases. In 55 years, the number of people aging 65 years and above will more than double, the number of those 75 and older will triple and the number of people 85 and older will quintuple. The elderly population is projected to multiply twice as much in size to well over 70 million by 2025. The states that will suffer the greatest growth in the number of residents over the age of 65 are in the west and south. As a percent of the total state population, states in the west and southwest will experience the greatest increases ( Lawler, 2001).Nearly all seniors own the homes in which they reside. The home-ownership rate for individuals between the age of 62 and 74 is 81.2 percent between the ages of 75 and 84, it remains high at 76.9 percent. As these homeowners age and their bodies become weaker, the regular maintenance and preservation of a home can become bodily demanding to manage. As the health needs of an aging senior and the repair needs of an aging house increase, both place necessitates on the restore income of a retiree (Lawler, 2001).The lack of housing for the elderly is one of the most depressing problems Washington DC is facing today. This situation exists because lesser priority is given to this problem. External researches reveal that there may be housing for the elderly like home for the aged yet it does not have the comprehensive health care program. Just the same, health care programs do not provide proper housing needs of the elderly. Hence, the program proposed above incorporates the housing and health care needs of the elderly individuals. In line with this dilemma, the lodging and urban Development had as well as been advocating projects which concern elderly housing. The Section 202 program gives capital advances (no interest loans that are forgiven given that affordability requirements are met for 40 years) and Project Rental Assistance Contracts (PRACs) for the construction or extensive rehabilitation and operation of residential projects and other related facilities for the elderly. lodgment financed under this program may consist of proper support services for elderly persons who are weak or at risk of being institutionalized.A possible problem that may arise in connection with this project would be the difficulty on selecting potential participants or elderly who will benefit the project. Moreover, not all elderly in need may be facilitated or accepted since the project is just starting out. The number of elderly individuals that could be accommodated will be limited. The Aging Healthy and Securely program aims to solve the problems presented above. The (Name of submitting Organization) wishes to complete the project, financially supported by the government, within the time allotted for the aforementioned(prenominal) project. We expect the fervent involvement or support of the HUD, State Housing Authority, city funds and other related organizations.ProceduresWashington is one of the many cities face with problems on elderly housing. The elderly population rate is overwhelming. Over 33 million people in the United States are now above 65 years of age and by the year 2020 it will increase to about 53 million, or one in every six Americans. To add, a great number of these elderly individuals need nursing care or health care.In spite of the relationship between health and housing, the health concerns of an aging individual are attended to by one agency or set of servi ces while the same individuals housing concerns are tackled by different sets of nonprofit and/or government organizations. This separation is directly related to the way the housing and health industries were planned and considered and continue to function in intelligible markets. While the private sector has created a greater number of models that unite both health and housing services, the public sector has continued to branch out the two.Public subsidies are intended to create either health or housing services but not both. Government-sponsored health programs and housing programs were devised to give off distinct public goods (Burkhardt, 1999). They were formed in isolation, as different line items in local, state and federal governments.Public housing programs and government mortgage subsidies were do to increase the number of inexpensive and sufficient housing units. The public system of health services was set up to support general public health and well-being, to offer he alth care for the very poor and to lessen the possibility of an outbreak or epidemic. The undertakings of public health and housing agencies were not only autarkic but mutually exclusive. From the information and figures presented at the current time, the future for the elderly individuals appear vague and unclear The need for a healthy, safe and decent reasonably priced housing and related services for the elderly is very critical. This alarming statistics gave the drive to (Name of the submitting Organization) come up with housing community consisting of 40 rooms (ten for offices and 30 for the elderly) which not only shelter these individuals but also provide staff that could attend to their health needs.ApproachDriven by the best intentions, the (Name of the submitting Organization) envisions the program to be multifaceted, big and innovative. The city has an immense necessity for additional reasonably priced or affordable housing for the elderly. The (Name of the submitting Or ganization) had identified a strategic location and will put up a 30 units/rooms elderly housing community. The location in which the housing community will be located is one sit which elderly housing has been identified as an essential need. Above and beyond the transitional housing, there will be a wide-ranging medical and social service and housing component involved in the program.Albeit the Washington state has homes for the aged, there is difficulty in looking for an elderly housing which is affordable and provides health care at its best. Most of the new constructed buildings in the city are for market rate units or commercial ones. This will have no effect on the increasing elderly population requiring housing and health assistance. There great numbers of depreciated buildings or deserted residences which if given attention and financed adequately, can be reborn into elderly housing units.Target Population/Participants The target population for the Aging Healthy and Secure ly program are those elderly individuals who are in need of medical or nursing assistance and who can not afford to stay in expensive elderly housing and health care units. To annotating worthwhile, the program will house those physically, financially and economically underprivileged elderly individuals with ages of 65 years and above. Elderly individuals with ages 60-64 years may be selected provided their illnesses call for prompt rehabilitation and care. Selection and screening of these elderly will not be very easy for the staff members assigned or the selection group. The selection of those individuals will be based on the family backgrounds, economic status, health records, financial capacity and other details or information material to the programs criteria collated by an assigned committee. Materials or records from the following may be used to select those elderly individuals that may be housed community or local agencies like health centers/hospitals for medical records, National Statistics Office for identification and personal records, social service and welfare agencies, public and privately-governed homeless centers, nursing homes, etc. Furthermore, over and above being in poor health condition, the elderly individuals must have a very low income and neglected by their family members. Only the sickest and the poorest seniors will be selected for the program. whole selection works are to be carried out without consideration of an individuals ethnic group, civilization, race, sex, or sexual orientation, and a statement to this effect will accompany all public service announcements, advertisements, and locally-placed flyers or posters. The building includes features like handrails or grab bars, raised lettering or Braille, ski tow or stair lift, faucets, or cabinets, special sinks, specially equipped telephones, extra wide doors or hallways, ramps, push bars on doors, flashing lights, special surround sockets or light switches and the like.Sustainability If funded sufficiently, the elderly health and housing care will tend to a lot of elderly individuals in need. After the construction of the housing units and when the operation is on full blast already, the (Name of submitting organization) will conduct a fund-raising activities every now and then for the maintenance of the housing community. Moreover, the (Name of submitting organization) will continue to seek financial assistance from the government from time to time to meet the programs financial obligations with the staff members as well as for the maintenance of the units and facilities. architectural plan ActivitiesElderly individuals will be categorized or leveled when deciding for the room assignments. Realism and Liberalism Essay

Realism and Liberalism are two major and dominant theories in globose politics. They both have contrasting ideas when dealing with how states should relate to each other. Realism is a conservative and pessimistic theory which states predicts and leave behind act on their depicted object interest regardless of morals. This belief results from people who are selfish and competitive. Realism is a perspective that is dominated by cynicism. Realists place each state in the position of closely observing the actions of their neighbors to resolve problems effectively without regarding moral concerns. Realists save want to maintain their own security. They al shipway want enough power so they can be strong enough to withstand attacks. They believe that the international system is inherently anarchical and cannot really be made peaceful exclude through power. Realists also do not believe in democratization. Realists also believe that countries will pursue power regardless of being democr atic. They believe countries will fight for their interests even if they and their opp peerlessnts are both democracies. Realists claim that only powerful states are true and key actors in international politics.Liberalism is progressive and optimistic. They emphasize that the patient of ties among states have both made it difficult to define national interest and decreased the usefulness of military power. Liberals believe that the international system can be manipulated to make peace. Liberals believe in organization like the United Nations. They believe that institutions like that allow various countries to interact in a variety of ways and will lead to less conflict between countries. They also believe in democratizations. They believe that democratic countries will not fight one another. They also believe in non-state actors and their importance. They tend to pay attention to individual leaders and also they give way to non-governmental organizations. Liberals believe military power is not the only form of power. Economic and social power matter a great deal too. Exercising economic power has proven more effective than physical exertion military power. These theories remind me of a documentary that I watched about Kofi Annan and the theory that he valued. I believe that there is a difference between squeeze and diplomacy. After watching the documentary, I came to a conclusion based on the lectures that Kofi Annan is a liberal. Im saying this because in the documentary, he states that he speaks for the poor, adynamic and the voiceless. He explains that he does not have power or any military resources. I also understand that, his influence is based on mentation and morals but not because hes the Secretary General. Discussing the September 11th disaster (after), he made it very clear that the United Nations hurly burly was not to side with one team but to create unity amongst all nations. Thus, this eradicates the realist point of view. He stated that t he security of every nation was one of the United Nations goals. I think that no other organization can take this job since its a very difficult task and it needfully a fair and firm leader who will not be bias, or work because of a personal interest. In the documentary, an example on benny Street was used to demonstrate how to instill peace amongst individuals, which explained further that its not always about talking or persuasion but its the misgiving and love that is expressed for one another. From both theories I think it depends on what the person values the most. Its either their self-interest or the interest of all. For example, Kofi Annans documentary made me understand.BibliographyKofi Annan Center of the Storm PBS

Clinical Governance Improving the Continuing Education of Nurses

clinical Governance Improving the Continuing Education of Nurses Myth or man engaging? Nurse Management MSc Practice Development Nursing Practice Route Faculty of Community Studies, Law and Education The Manchester Metropolitan University Jean Rogers inculcate Mary Shaw Submission Date 8th August 2005 Word Count Nursing has changed radically over the last two decades and is continuing to do so. well-nigh would say for the better others for the worse (Rushford and Ireland 1997).The purpose of this assignment is to offer a critical analysis of clinical governance as it applies to breast feeding and the effect it has had on nurses on going continuing fosterageal needs. By the term critical analysis I do not mean that I shall attempt to reduce clinical governance, or claim that it is harmful to patients or staff. Instead, I will attempt to discern its nature in a rigorous way and interpret how it has led to a change in the way maestros and patients in health c ar are conceptualis ed and how this has had an effect on the on going continuing education of nurses. The introduction of clinical governance has resulted in change not only in care for practice but also in the subjectivity of nurses and their educational needs. Staff do appear to be embracing the notion of clinical governance, however there appears to be very few changes apparent at the direct of patient care (Brown and Crawford 2001). The major changes appear to involve their attitudes, and how they conceptualise themselves and their work. In addition, the introduction of clinical governance appears to involve encouraging a new kind of consciousness on the part of patients, amongst whom a greater degree of responsibility is demanded. In reviewing the literature on clinical governance in nursing it appears that there possess not been many critics. Indeed, searching the main electronic databases which cover topics which relate to nursing the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL), Psyc info and Medline and numerous books has not revealed material which adopts a critical stance towards clinical governance and evidence based practice which are currently buzz words in the nursing profession and the broader network of health care provision in the United Kingdom (UK) as a whole. There has been some criticism in relation to nursing research This omission is surprising as Brown and Crawford (2001) maintain the efforts of commercial organisations to change their culture and urge this change on their workforce is similar to those changes being encouraged in the health care system and have been subject to considerable debate and critical analysis (Du Gay, 1997, Casey, 1999).Yet overwhelmingly the nursing literature has heavy on how the process of clinical governance can be facilitated rather than anything else (Lilley, 1999 McSherry and Haddock, 1999). In order to critically analyse these concepts it is judicious to define clinical governance. clinical governance has been promoted as a way of managing the organisation, resourcing and delivery of health care in the UK for several years now and it is a process which has grown in strength and popularity during that time. The standard definition of clinical governance which is promoted in the literature is from the paper a first class service (Department of Health (DH), 1998) is that it is a fashion model through which National Health Service (NHS) organisations are accountable for continuously improving the quality of their services, and safeguarding high standards of care, by creating an environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish. (Page )In addition to this, the precise pathways under which this was to be achieved were elaborated in an earlier document The New NHS Modern and Dependable (DH, 1997) which depict three major strands in the strategy. First, there was to be a set of clear national standards, delivered through national service frameworks (DH, 1999) and the National Instit ute for Clinical Excellence (NICE). Second, the local delivery of quality services was to be undertaken via the mechanism of clinical governance and a statutory duty of quality and this was to be back up by lifelong learning programmes and professional self-regulation.Thirdly, the services themselves were to be monitored via the Commission for Health Improvement (CHI) and the NHS Performance Framework (Lilley, 1999). However, very often these bodies and mechanisms of tick are rather remote from everyday life in the ward and, staff and patients are made increasingly reliant on their own powers of self control in order to live up to these political and managerial imperatives (Holmes, 2001).It is the second strand that this assignment will be concentrating on. Conclusion Whatever nursings response to clinical governance, it is vital that nurses are aware of the kinds of changes which it will involve for their consciousness and subjectivity as practitioners in order to ensure they ret ain their professional independence in the light of these new policies.

How Does Steinbeck Present the Character of Curley’s Wife? Essay

Steinbeck presents Curleys wife as dangerous as she has the power as she is get hitched with to the owners son and she is not afraid to exercise that power. But also she is a victim of loneliness as Curley is not that interested in her and she has to stay on the ranch doing nothing but wondering around looking for company. This makes Curleys wife both guilty and innocent. Steinbeck uses candy to forewarn the indorser about Curleys wife in their first meeting, this is significant as it shows that Curleys wife is interpreted as jail bait as George says. The fact that George is pre-warned about this potential danger is ironic as despite the warning she is the problem that ends up getting Lennie killed. Steinbeck describes her physical appearance first, she is described as genuinely sexually attractive and uses this to bait guys in. she uses her physical appearance as her main weapon, and in the end of the book Lennie gets in trouble because she tempts him to stroke her soft hair.Ste inbeck shows moments of her universe overly cruel. She gets lonely and looks around for people to talk to but when she realises that the guys dont want to talk to her she turns on crooks telling him that she can get him hanged because she would summon him of rape. Steinbeck uses her talk with Lennie to make you sympathise with her. She talks about how she could have been in the pictures but she thought her mum threw away the letters about it and that how she is now stuck on a ranch were everyone ignores her and she is lonely. Steinbeck finishes by saying that she is a nice, good person but the only way she could get noticed was if she expressed her sexuality to the guys on the ranch, thats the only way they would pay attention to her.

Biography of Xerxes

Born in c. 519 BC, of the parents King Darius and his married woman Atossa came Xerxes. He was raised in the lavish opulence of an eastern court and became the designated replacement to his amazes thr ane in which he was to rule over the greatest empire of his time for 21 years. The Iranian imperium. He was non the oldest of Darius give-and-takes provided still became the heir over his oldest br other Artabazanes. There were two main reasons for this, His mother Atossa was the daughter of the great Cyrus making Xerxes his grandson.According to Herodotus Atossa would adopt utilized her influence to get her son on the throne. Herodotus book 7 section-3. Xerxes stated superior claim to the throne for the same reasons. Spartan King Demaratus who was exiled from Sparta and in the Persian court at the time, suggested that they use the Spartan custom to elect a king. That is that the son who is born first while the king sits on the throne will be the heir no matter how many sons th ere were before the king became king Herodotus book 7 section-3.This made Xerxes the rightful heir how ever he describes his accession himself on limestone foundation block at Persepolis My Father was Darius Darius father was Hystaspes by name Hystaspes father was Arsames by name saith Xerxes the King Other sons of Darius there were, (but)- thus unto Ahura-Mazda was the desire- Darius my father made me the greatest after himself. When my father Darius went away from the throne, by will of Ahura-Mazda I became king on my fathers throne. So to help legitimise his claim to the throne, Xerxes uses Ahura-Mazda.In another inscription he supports himself by saying I am Xerxes, the great king, king of king, king of lands containing many men, king in this great mankind far and wide, son of Darius the king, an Achaemid, a Persian, son of a Persian, an Aryan, of Aryan seed. Here he emphasises that he an Achaemenid to add weight on his claim to the throne. According to A. T. Olmstead, Xer xes gained administrative experience by living in the royal Babylonian palace and being able to rule Babylon. Though there is not enough differentiate to support this. Some historians say that Darius and Xerxes shared co-regency, but there is not enough evidence to support this either. The evidence we do have on his reason and early life before he became king is that his father was a believer in the god Ahura Mazda and therefore a follower of Zoastrianism. We know that Xerxes carried this on. As far as we know the only real education according to Herodotus that Persian boys were taught was to Ride, to use the bow, and to speak the truth Herodotus book 1 pg. 137.The most central and significant things in Xerxes life that contributed to his assent was being the grandson of the greatest king Persia had seen and his mother being that kings daughter and able to use her influence. Xerxes became the king of the Persian Empire in 485BC. In his 25 years of reign he achieved many things. He was certainly not a lazy ruler and her proved this in the early years of his reign with the swift crushing of the Babylonian and Egyptian revolts. Even as a new king he portrayed traits of a strong and strict monarch. He sent an army against the Egyptian rebels and decisively crushed them. Herodotus book 7 section-7.The most famous expedition Xerxes was conducted as his stress to invade Greece. This is seen to most people as a failure as the Greeks defeated him. Though it can also be looked upon as an achievement because although he failed to encompass the entire country into his empire he still managed to destroy Athens, which was one of his main priorities in the first place. I will not lay until I have taken Athens and burnt it to the ground, in revenge for the injury in which the Athenians without provocation did to me and my Father Herodotus book 7 section-8-b.So his wipeout of Athens can be looked upon as an achievement. Xerxes was by no means a poor military conductor as he shows good heed and organisational skills in the way he amasses and upholds his army. He had clever and careful planning when it came to invading and according to Cameron and Lawless, Xerxes extended his empire into Thrace and Macedonia as well as adding dirt from distant eastern provinces page 99. His achievements dont just focus on warlike activities. His building programs at Persepolis and some closer to home show that his ambitions did not just consist of taking land. He thought expanding his empire was important but so to was internal development. King Darius my father built and ordered to be built much good construction. By the favour of Ahura mazda I added to that construction and built further (buildings). Cameron and Lawless, pg 181. Xerxes began building almost straight after he ascended the throne, but the majority of his constructions were done in the last three years of his reign. Some of the buildings consist of the Apadana, which was an audience hall in the P ersian royal palace. It was started by Darius and sunk by Xerxes. Harem was Xerxes palace that he built for himself The Central Building was another construction ordered by Xerxes Throne Hall or other wise known as The Hall of 100 Columns, was believed to have been started by Xerxes and finished by Artaxerxes Palace H was another incomplete building believed to have been stared by Xerxes and incomplete inscriptions suggest that it may have been finished by Artaxerxes. These are just a few examples of the achievements this man completed in his life. It is travel by that he was a serious ruler who had many ambitions in his life. The love life of Xerxes is a complicated subject to find evidence on. Herodotus mentions him having only one wife named Amestris and the information on her is extremely little. Her father was probably Otanes who was a Persian nobleman and one of the seven conspirators who helped Darius become King. Further research uncovers the written report of Esther and Q ueen Vashti. There is more information on the bilgewater of Esther and Queen Vashti then there is on Amestris. The story of Esther and Vashti is also more probable to be mythology then real history, as a lot of the information doesnt add up. Herodotus neither mentions Esther or Vashti in his histories and he is our main source to this catamenia in time. The story of Esther is a book in the bible and is where the Jewish celebration of Purim comes from. According to the story of Esther, King Xerxes was banqueting with all his friend and he was boasting about how he had the finest of everything. Then he called for his wife, Queen Vashti, and told her to walk around in front of his guests wearing nothing but her crown because he believed she was the most beautiful woman and he wanted to show everyone. Vashti was greatly insulted and refused so she was deposed. A beauty contest was held for Xerxes to select a new wife and he chose a young girl called Esther who he apparently fell instant ly in love with. Esthers real name was Hadassah but she changed it to blur her Jewish identity. Then with the help of her influence on Xerxes and her cousin Mordecai she was ale to save the Jewish people from slaughter. This story his been questioned by many scholars and historians and is believed to be mythical. Though there isnt much mentioned on Amestris, from the main story she takes part in we are able to piece together quite a picture of her. Amestris wove a wonderful shawl as a present for her husband Xerxes. He gave it to his brothers daughter Artaynte with whom he had had an affair with. When Amestris discovered this betrayal she was furious and instanter blamed Artayntes mother and had her brutally mutilated. Xerxes brother then beside himself plotted a rebellion against Xerxes and Xerxes had him killed. From this story we can already gather that Amestris was a envious and not so nice woman who held quite a bit of power over Xerxes, As she wasnt punished for what she did. There is another story of Amestris that leads us to believe she wasnt that good a woman. A custom of Persia was burying people aliveAmestris in her old age did it to fourteen Persian boys of distinguished families, by way of a present which she hoped the god of the under world would except instead of herself Herodotus book 7 section-114. In 465BC Xerxes was found off in his bedchambers. According to Cameron and Lawless, specific details on the death of Xerxes are unknown. It suggests that Artabanus, the commander of the palace guards murdered him with the help of Aspamitres, a court eunuch pg. 100. hence Xerxes ended his reign of the Persian Empire as a victim of palace conspiracy and was succeeded by his son Artaxerxes.

Moreover, with his particular creative spirit and rather elegant races language, especially his excellent humor and satire, he is deeply praised by American people. Mark Twain wrote many short stories and these stories profoundly analyz e and expose short? comings and ugliness of capitalist society. As for humorous satire, Running for Governor is a representative short story. The story creates an unreal independent nominee who suffers a series of nasty and shameless slander to expose the hypocrisy of American Democracy and the rottenness and depravity of the cap? italist system under the guise of American Democracy. Mark Twains penetrating and remarkable portray of Bourgeois politicians profoundly reveals the hypocrisy of burgess democratic electoral system. Therefore, Running for Governor is an excellent humorous satire works, which is ideological and instructive. 2 Mark Twains sidesplitting Satire in Running for Governor. In Running for Governor, at the beginning of the story, Twain wrote A a few(prenominal) months ago I was nominated for Governor of the massive state of New York, to run against Mr. John T. metalworker and Mr. Blank J. Blank on the independent ticket. I somehow felt that I had one crowing ad vantage over these gentlemen, and that wasgood character. 1 Three specific characters appear, I is the indepen? dence Partys candidate, who is an adept and honest man with sim? ple thoughts, The Republican candidate Mr. John T. metalworker, and the Democratic candidate Mr. Blank J. In American literature, Twain is not only a great humorist, but also an eminent master who developed a remarkable style of his own colloquialism. His greatness lies in blending of humor with lively language. In the first rumor perjury, after Mr. John T. Smith and Mr. Blank J. During 19th century, this period, American literature strongly tended to view the course it was taking as divergent widely from the English tradition while trying to give expressions to awareness informed by local in? fluence.Of the thr ee writers Eliot chooses as the landmark of the coming of age of American literature to be found, in his opinion, at the moment when American writers were first acknowledged to be influencing other literature, one is Mark Twain. He is justly renowned as a humorist but was not always appre?ciated by the writers of his cartridge holder more than that. Successive genera? tions of writers, however, recognized the role that Twain played in creating a truly American literature. His success in creating this plan but evocative language precipitated the end of American rever? ence for British and European cultures and for the more formal lan? guage associated with those traditions. His achievement creating timeless art in the vernacular, helped advance American ethnical in? dependence and diversity.4 Conclusion Mark Twain is a remarkable representative of American realis?tic literature in the 19th century, he is the first writer who had the literary creation Americanization and had the lite rary language nationalize. With hard work, he finished lots of literature works in his life. In his works of literature, he laughed at, satirized and criti? cized the power of money, the hypocritical morality, corrupted poli? tics, etc. It is full of Mark Twains humor, he criticized and satirized the social hideousness venomously. Mark Twain detailed the social hid? eousness with his particular humor. It is full of relaxation, optimism and humorous style.Running for Governor is an outstanding representative of Twains political satirical novel in 19th century. Twain fabricated an unreal independent partisan I (not the author) who eventually had to abandon the campaign for New York governor because of abuse, rumors and ad hominem attacks from the opponents through ex? aggerated, humorous satire, to profoundly reveal the dirty inside of free election, rip the U. S. two-party system, and expose a capi? talist freedom of speech, thus humorously satirizing the hypocrisy of the bourgeoi s democracy. 3 Overseas English ? ? ? ? To sum up, fundamentally, Twain is a great humorist. He once said, there are several kinds of stories, but only one differentthe humorous. So to be humorous in his writing I venture to say is his lifelong pursuit. It is also undeniable that Twain is the only giant who had brought both local colorism and humor to the world fame. Meanwhile he once claimed that he was a well(p) writer and was ac? tively concerned with moral ideas in many ways. However, when he found the darkness, corruption, injustice and the personal tragic en?counters he had to withstand in particular, he became firstly serious and then bitter ironic. It follows therefore that we should take these elements into consideration when analyzing Twains writing charac? teristics as well as himself. In short, both the changing social reality and the unpredictable personal tragedies directly and eventually re? sulted in his humorous satire. In Mark Twains autobiography, he had summed up the experi? ence from his humorous novelsIt is impossible to humor for the hu? mor. Humor is just a flavor and snapshots.I have always told people that why I can persist for 30 years. Thus we can see that Mark Twain had the humor and satire as his writing features, as the basis of writing his humorous novels. 4 Notes 1 Wang Qun. Guide to Mark TwainM. London, June 16 (ANI) Eve perversive in Bangladesh has interpreted such a heavy toll on the demesnes women that the reading ministry there has voted to cast off an Eve Teasing Protection Day. The announcement was made after the change magnitude concern over the worrying number of daughters and women who have recently attached suicide in the inelegant to escape eve peevish, a euphemism for intimate harassment. According to figures released by the Ain-O-Shalish Kendra (ASK) human rights organisation, 14 girls and women have taken their own lives over the past four months across the country as a direct resolving power of the insults. In addition, a father and a daughter also affiliated suicide together in an incident blamed by the authorities on eve teasing. Police say 3 men who publicly protested against the harassment have been killed over the past 12 weeks.Critics argue that laws, which should prohibit informal harassment, are so poorly drafted that victims get virtuall y no help from the law enforcement agencies. Families of the victims are leave feeling hopeless and helpless. Some victims find suicide is the only avenue that e sail throughles them to escape this social pandemic, the BBC quoted sultana Kamal, executive director of ASK, as saying. The situation is very frightening. The suicides of 14 girls are an alarming sign of the times. If it is not controlled, we women can no longer live in society with any dignity, she said. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid eyepatch admitting to the menace said female students and female teachers were at present not safe on the streets or schools, a situation leading to an increased drop-out rate of female students in many schools, and underage marriages.(ANI) Bengal girl commits suicide after versed harassmentKolkata, August 14 (IANS) Subjected to regular sexual harassment by a some local youths and pursual an altercation with her father on the issue, a 13-year-old-school girl committed suicide by i mmolating herself in West Bengals Burdwan district, police said Tuesday. Four people have been arrested in this connection.Ujjawala Prasad, 13, had set herself on fire last night and she succumbed toinjuries Tuesday morning. Her father has lodged a complaint against nine persons who had been harassing the girl for the past few days. Four persons have been arrested, a police officer said. The incident happened in Hirapur in Burdwan district, 213 km from Kolkata. Police said the girl complained to her father about some boys teasing her regularly, pursuance which he went to confront them. The boys said the girl was having an affair with one of them. The father had a heated stemma with the girl Monday night. After the incident, Leader of Opposition and Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Surjya Kanta Mishra said Not a single day passes when an incident of an attack on women is not reported. Today a girl committed suicide in Asansol after she was harassed by men. The attacks on wo men, especially on minor girls, has ginger snap up.Rising incidents of sexual harassment and increasing public anger in protest has prompted the Bangladesh government, headed by a woman, Sheikh Hasina, to take action. In the latest incident Friday, villagers set fire to houses of some alleged snitchs in Talupara village in Sirajganj district, about 110 km northwest of Dhaka. The mob also caught a stalkers father and handed him over to the police. In an separate incident, at least 10 members of a family were Wednesday beaten for protesting against stalking, and one of them died, The Daily Star reported. Abdur Rauf, son of Delwar, used to pester Kamruls wife Joinab, 18, every day. After Joinab brought the matter to Delwars attention, Rauf and his men went to Kamruls house and beat up his family. Kamruls uncle Aser Ali succumbed to injuries on way to hospital. In another incident last week, a school girls father, who managed to nab her stalker and hand him over to the police, could no t take questions from the media and died of heart attack. The government has promised a law to proscribe sexual harassment of women at work. But the problem is difficult to tackle in villages where women and young girls from dispirited families or with men away on work face harassment from idle, at times separate off, youths. The government declared to observe June 13 as the Eve Teasing Protection Dayfrom this year. The crock up to raise public awareness comes from the presence of several women in public life. In a country where the prime minister (Sheikh Hasina), foreign minister (Dipu Moni), home minister (Sajeda Khatun), agriculture minister (Motia Chowdhury) and the leader of the enemy (Begum Khaleda Zia) are female, women and girls cannot walk on the streets, use public transport, or go to school, shops, parks or other public places without often being ogled, taunted, harassed, humiliated, sexually molested, groped and assaulted and in some cases, attacked with acid, abduct ed and raped, The Daily Star lamented in a commentary Saturday.According to the Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association, almost 90 percent of girls aged 10-18 years are victims of sexual harassment. The perpetrators range from college students and unemployed youth to street vendors, rickshaw pullers, bus drivers, fellow passengers, colleagues and supervisors. Sexual terrorism thrives on patriarchal attitudes, prejudices, cultural norms, double standards and discriminatory laws that devalue women and deny them their rights. Eradicating it will require transformative social change, the newspaper publisher said.A large number of school and college students held a rally in Dhaka to protest against eve teasing and the sexual harassment of women. According to the BBC, the rally was the latest in a series of protests following a number of suicides and killings involving women subjected to bullying and harassment. The protestors have urged the Bangladesh government to take proper ste ps to curb sexual harassment and provide better protection for women. Some right-wing parties say that if the girls wear a veil, thus they can escape Eve teasing, but we dont think so.We need tougher legislation and it should be properly implemented to stop this menace, one of the protestors said. Young girls often face verbal abuse, taunts and stalkers, and critics are forcibly silenced. Those harassing them are often their school colleagues or men in the street, the report said. According to activists, eve teasing and sexual harassment has led to the deaths of more than 24 people, most of them women, since the beginning of this year in the country. In recent days, some who have spokenout against sexual harassment have been murdered, it added. (ANI)
